Common Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the condition but may include chronic fatigue, joint pain or swelling, skin rashes, dryness or itch, recurrent infections, poor recovery, and reduced stamina. Some individuals may also experience sleep disturbances, stress-related symptoms, or fluctuating energy levels. In autoimmune conditions, symptoms may come in flares and remission cycles.

Possible Causes
TCM View
In TCM, autoimmune conditions are viewed through a holistic and functional lens. Rather than being seen solely as immune overactivation, these disorders are understood to arise from an imbalance in the body’s internal systems, leading to disturbances in the normal flow and function of Qi (vital energy). Qi is closely associated with the body’s defensive and regulatory functions, which may be considered analogous to aspects of immune health.
When Qi is weakened, blocked, or imbalanced, the body’s ability to regulate itself is compromised, giving rise to chronic inflammation, fatigue, and autoimmune manifestations.
Common patterns include:
- Qi deficiency (气虚) – Low energy, weak immunity, and increased susceptibility to illness
- Spleen deficiency (脾虚) – Poor digestion and nutrient transformation, contributing to fatigue and dampness accumulation
- Lung Qi deficiency (肺气虚 / 卫气不足) – Weak defensive Qi, leading to frequent infections or sensitivity to external factors
- Kidney deficiency (肾虚) – Reduced vitality and resilience, often seen in chronic or long-standing conditions
- Dampness, phlegm, or damp-heat (湿 / 痰 / 湿热) – Contributing to inflammation, swelling, skin conditions, and metabolic imbalance
- Blood stasis (血瘀) – Chronic obstruction and poor circulation, associated with pain and long-term disease
- Liver Qi stagnation (肝气郁结) – Stress-related imbalance affecting immune regulation and overall wellbeing
Modern View
Auto-immune conditions occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own healthy tissues, leading to ongoing inflammation and damage to affected organs. Allergies, on the other hand, result from an overreaction of the immune system to normally harmless substances such as pollen, dust mites, foods, or pet dander.
Common auto-immune conditions and allergic disorders include:
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
- Psoriasis
- Autoimmune thyroid disease
- Eczema (atopic dermatitis)
- Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
- Food allergies
- Asthma (allergic asthma)
- Urticaria (hives)
These conditions may affect the skin, joints, respiratory system, digestive tract, thyroid, or other organs, and can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life. While many are chronic conditions, appropriate treatment can help control symptoms, reduce flare-ups, and improve long-term health.
How we treat
TCM
Balancing body’s constitution
Herbal medicine and acupuncture are used to restore functional balance, regulate Qi and blood, and harmonise organ systems
Support the body’s self‑regulating capacity
Both acupuncture and herbal medicine can improve the immune function and balance, reduce the underlying tendency toward autoimmune activity and inflammation
Western medicine
Comprehensive assessment
Clinical evaluation with blood tests, allergy tests, imaging, or other investigations to confirm the diagnosis
Medication
Antihistamines, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, DMARDs, biologics, or other targeted therapies based on the condition
Allergen management
Allergy testing and trigger avoidance to reduce allergic reactions
Regular monitoring
Ongoing follow-up to assess disease activity, treatment response, and medication safety
Lifestyle support
Guidance on nutrition, skin care, exercise, sleep, stress management, and other preventive measures
Specialist care
Coordinated management with relevant specialists for complex or long-term conditions
Wellness
Lifestyle and dietary optimisation advisory
To support better long-term disease control, helping individuals achieve greater stability, fewer flare-ups, and enhanced overall quality of life.
