Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a core TCM therapy that involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points lie along pathways known as meridians, which are believed to regulate the flow of vital energy, or “Qi” (pronounced “chee”).
From a Western medical perspective, acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the nervous system, improve blood circulation, and trigger the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during acupuncture. The needles used are extremely thin—much finer than those used for injections.
You may feel:
- A slight tingling or dull ache at the insertion point
- A sense of warmth or heaviness
- A mild electric or radiating sensation (a sign of Qi activation)
Cupping
Cupping involves placing specialized cups on the skin to create gentle suction. This technique helps to:
- Improve blood flow
- Release muscle tension
- Promote detoxification
Cups may be made of glass, plastic or bamboo and are typically left in place for several minutes. Temporary circular marks on the skin are common and usually fade within a few days.
